great interview, brooke, this reporter really gave some local and insightful perspective an analysis of what is happening and has been happening there.

I just listened to your OTM interview. I am a lifelong Saint Louisan and did NOT recognize the city you described. I know you have a point of view and wanted to create a particular impression on the listener, but it was irresponsible of you to extrapolate from individual pockets of poverty, crime and derelict housing stock in ONE geographic area (North City and adjacent municipalities of North County) to make general, sweeping statements about all of Saint Louis. Let's not make the situation worse for everyone here by painting with too broad a brush, please.

As a former resident of Ferguson MO, I appreciate the comments of Sarah Kendzior's on OTM - she had it correctly and thoroughly. Her perspective as a local both insightful and knowledgable. Better than CNN and MSNBC. Thank you

A very puzzling interview:

1) SK's suggestion that media coverage is an inconvenience to the locals. Why? Media coverage draws attention to police behavior which is a good thing since otherwise it would be open season on local brown people.

2)SK's accusation that outsiders are only interested in this to turn it into riot porn. Why cast that light on it? Is solidarity not a possibility?

3) We should leave it to the locals to resolve this in "productive ways"...and what would those be?

4) SK said NOTHING about life in Ferguson. NOTHING about the fact that there's a warrant out for every adult in Ferguson. NOTHING about the fact that the poor people of Ferguson are subsidizing a police force whose main reason for existence is to extort money from Ferguson to pay for their own salary...and tanks.

5) Finally, the insistence that this is a local matter best handled by locals obscures the fact that racial profiling and arbitrary police violence against people of color are universal in the US. It obscures the fact that the KKK is redundant in this country because lynching has been institutionalized. There is the slow lynching of the school to prison pipeline and the quick lynching instant death meeted to the unfortunate brown man who reaches for his wallet at the wrong time, who jailwalks, who "resists arrest," or whose house is wrongfully targeted in some SWAT team action.

All in all a very strange interview.

Sarah Kendzior's comments offer an insightful view of this city and its long term prospects. I am a fan of local media because it is the folks who actually live in the community who can provide an accurate and not sensational description for the rest of the world.
