DUNCANVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - A teacher from the Duncanville Independent School District has been suspended following a controversial post on her personal Twitter page. Vinita Hegwood has been suspended from classes, and she might end up losing her job.
Hegwood is currently an English teacher at Duncanville High School. She met with the school’s principal, the director of human resources, and the district’s superintendent on Monday morning to discuss the online posting, after the district promised to take swift action to address the issue.
A profanity-laced tweet was posted to Hegwood’s social media page on Friday, referencing the police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri. The tweet has since been removed, but it reportedly stated that white people who disagree with her viewpoint should kill themselves.
“Hegwood expressed an opinion on social media that is solely her own,” the school district explained in a statement. “While everyone has the right to free speech, as a teacher in the district, we believe the comments that are alleged to be made by Ms. Hegwood are absolutely reprehensible and we do not condone it.”
A spokesperson for the Duncanville ISD explained that Hegwood has been suspended without pay pending her discharge. The final decision on her job termination will come from the school board. The board meets on Monday night, but this is not going to be addressed, according to the agenda. The next meeting is scheduled for December 8, but trustees could call for a special meeting before then to discuss Hegwood’s termination.
Records show that Hegwood has been an educator in the State of Texas for 19 years.
“I can’t say it emphatically enough,” said Lari Barager with the Duncanville ISD, “the nature of the comments are reprehensible, and this district is about inclusion. It’s about diversity. It’s about respect for all people.”
