Stop Patriarchy Is Crashing Texas with Its Abortion Freedom Ride, and Local Feminists Are Pissed

Wendy Davis' 11th-hour filibuster in June 2013 didn't ultimately stop the Texas Legislature from passing some of the country's most sweeping abortion restrictions, nor did it stop abortion clinics across the state from shutting their doors when they couldn't meet the stringent new standards or obtain the newly required admitting privileges at local hospitals. It almost certainly didn't change anyone's mind on the issue itself.

What the filibuster did do, aside from laying the foundation for Davis' gubernatorial campaign, is breathe a new sense of possibility into Texas' grassroots reproductive-rights movement, which has been busy planting new seeds and attempting to keep the momentum alive.

It should probably go without saying that, on general principal, grassroots types would prefer that any Revolutionary Communist Party-linked, East Coast feminist groups refrain from cloaking themselves in the rhetoric of the Civil Rights movement and taking a road trip through Texas calling for "abortions on demand." More specifically, they want the group Stop Patriarchy to call off the Abortion Freedom Ride it has planned for Texas next month and stay in New York.

Stop Patriarchy's itinerary:

For the month of August through September 1: The Abortion Rights Freedom Ride will caravan through Texas, stopping in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and then down to the Rio Grande Valley near the Mexican border. People from around the country and around Texas will politically confront and protest those behind the anti-abortion attacks and laws, rally support for those on the front lines providing abortions, fight to change the way people think about abortion by raising the slogans: Abortion On Demand and Without Apology and Forced Motherhood is Female Enslavement, and wake people up nation-wide to this emergency.

Hence the #FuckStopPatriarchy hashtag, which writer/activist/clinic escort Katie Klabusich coined in a Twitter rant/blog post over the weekend.

The basic complaint of Klabusich and those who have joined the #FuckStopPatriarchy chorus on Twitter is that Stop Patriarchy is carpetbagging, helicoptering into Texas to raise funds and gain attention from a battle they have played no role in fighting. There are other complaints, too, most tied up with the internal politics of the feminist movement, e.g. an outcry over the group's vilification of pornography and the sex industry.

So far, the two sides are mostly tweeting past each other:

Sept. 1st, all but 6 abortion clinics in TX set to close - and you are COMPLAINING that people are coming from around the country to fight that? Women are ALREADY self-inducing abortions in Texas and other areas of the US. In Wichita, KS teenage girls with unplanned pregnancy are getting into fist fights to attempt miscarriage, because abortion, and women that get abortions are so stigmatized. Areas of the US are already under the terror of the coat hanger...and overall there is a national abortion rights EMERGENCY. At this time of unparalleled danger to women, if you don't like Stop Patriarchy's program -- what is yours to defeat this war??? More of the same???

@Dallas_Observer Are you going to continue to report on #FuckStopPatriarchy, or will you report on what is happening to women that cannot access legal abortion, and the courts and legislators acting to codify woman-hating laws that criminalize abortion and murder women???

The #FuckStopPatriarchy crowd are the same kind of pearl-clutchers who drove Wilhelm Reich to an early grave.

Disappointed I am in these comments, especially for a town that saw history's first published use of the phrase "dykes on bikes" (1986 Repub convention). Where's the outrage? Communists? protests? abortion? feminists? the buzzcut chick holding the sign on the left? outsider feminists against our feminists? anybody?

Probably been listening to Abba music and eating jello, I reckon.

some of the country's most sweeping abortion restrictions

Yeah, they are almost as restrictive as France.  I mean, if they get any more restrictive, they might be as bad as Sharia.

Why is it some of these FemiNazi's are so UGLY, that no one would want to reproduce with them in the first place. I dont think there is enough Beer & Wine to get me drunk enough for a few of them.

@wcvemail I guess I'm just bored with people like this.  It's all the same whether it's StopPatriarchy, Occupy, or any number of left wing groups.  It's all the same people accentuating a different part of the same agenda.  All too stupid to realize they'll never be taken seriously until they grow up and get real jobs.  Then the next group of college sophomores takes an extended break from school and joins the cause.

Besides it looks more like OccupyWhatever rebranded itself.  I think that 0/5 vaginas is very generous.

"We are not going to chase a "debate" w/ folks who are clearly set on sabotaging w/ lies & distortion. Just for the record."

So they will just spread their own disinformation.

Yeah, I woulda pointed out that the cadre is seeking to loudly clamor for too-far-for-Texas-at-this-time revolution in repro rights, at the expense of locally knowledgeable and diligently working activists whose cause is set back by such no-consequences extremism. But then she would have sneered at my opinion and the efforts of the people who have to live here year in/year out, so it was easier to try to tweak the comrade into spittle launch.

@wcvemail What is high dudgeon?  Is it a new InnerWeb thang...or a local thang?

@wcvemail  Why aren't you? Isn't this situation for women worth your outrage? And worth fighting against? Why don't you consider the Qs I just posed? They are not rhetorical.

So no dudgeon at all, then, high or otherwise. Sigh.

Seriously, there is an interesting, non-same story about the Rev. Comm. Party and the guy Avakian, who are impelling the righteously roused sophomores. SDS remnant+personality cult - that was interesting, at least.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul Tell me please, what part of the abortion rights EMERGENCY is Stop Patriarchy actually wrong about? The facts please, Not the opinions and disagreements that others happen to have about trying to TURN the TIDE in favor of ABORTION on DEMAND and WITHOUT APOLOGY

Andrea Grimes, formerly a DO writer with the handle "Girl on Top," has a tweet quoted.

Also, the "$30K millionaire" thing was a pretty good article by Grimes about Dallas douche-bags that spawned a pretty good continuing theme on UP.

Now you owe me a double cheese burger, and I want extra-sharp cheddar, none of that namby-pamby, artificial "cheese product."

Very local (to me in this blog), Jack, and very old, dating back to the 16th century (neither this blog nor I date back that far, though.) It means "a fit or feeling of indignation or outrage," and for some reason, it's almost always used with "high": "in high dudgeon." I use it to let people self-qualify on this blog, when I can virtually see the saliva froth flying.

In other words, I'm fucking with outraged people in the hopes of either/both puzzling/further outraging them.

No problem was ever solved, or even lessened, by froth-flying comments on this blog, especially by those who drop in simply to vent on a single subject, never to be heard from again. So I'm having a bit of fun at their expense. As the English say, I'm taking the piss (not A piss, as we Yanks say.)

Now you got a twofer-one definition. You owe me at least one something. Whatdya got?

Please, no shouting.  Besides this story doesn't give any sort of explanation to what your plans are.

It is sort of like the tag line to the cereal commercial, "part of this nutritious breakfast".

I see nothing in the article that is an explanation of why the recently passed restrictions should be removed.  What I do see in the article looks more like well honed rabble rousing than a group with a clearly articulated goal and a reasonable, rational discussion that is at least an attempt at persuading people to join with your group.  What I read so far is an old time worn tactic that is basically: "If you are not with us then you are against us".

By the way, what is your position on the death penalty for certain crimes?

That's "genuine imitation cheese like food substance product (may or may not contain dairy products, processed in a facility that processes nuts, dolphin safe)".

After all, Velveeta is labeled as a "Pasteurized Recipe Cheese Product".

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @wcvemail

There was a thing in Kansas City called Velveeta Cheese Soup that was tried as a winter lunch dish, and proved so popular that it was imitated across the city that winter several years ago. Bless their hearts.

But if the Revolutionary Communist Party has their way, we won't have the right to Velveeta Cheese Soup! And no subservient women will be making it! (one last, forlorn try at sparking this board, but no, this one is a lost cause for caustic comments.)

@DonkeyHotay @ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @MaxNoDifference @wcvemail

let women get abortions. they have the right to choose if they want to kill babies. How is it the womans right to choose? They have the right to choose not to have sex. They have the right to choose to use protection. They have the right to choose to use the morning after pill. They have the right to choose to abort up to 8 weeks. Then they have the right to choose to put the baby up for adotion. It sounds like women allready have plenty of choises. Maybe we should make it a crime for women not to choose before a certian time is up. Girls it is time to shit or get off the pot.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@tiredofurlies ... and of course they have the RIGHT to choose to abort and remove any parasitic growth inside THEIR OWN BODIES, for any reason, without any input or approval from meddling moralizing hypocrites like you.

Maybe they should make it a crime for Men who choose to have sex without protection, or who chose to have sex at all, if and when it results in an unwanted pregnancy. Perhaps that should be equivalent to rape.
