Same-sex marriages can proceed in Kansas.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports the U.S. Supreme Court has lifted a stay Justice Sonia Sotomayor placed on the unions.
The decision came following an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit challenging Kansas' constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriages. A U.S. District Court judge had said same-sex marriages should be allowed in Sedgwick and Douglas counties, where the plaintiffs in the ACLU lawsuit reside, because of a decision by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. That court struck down state bans in Utah and Oklahoma, and Kansas is under the court's jurisdiction.
Some analysts say that although the District Court judge only mentioned marriages in Sedgwick and Douglas counties, the Supreme Court order can be applied statewide.
However, the battle over same-sex marriage in Kansas could continue with further challenges.
