Texas State Representative Mike Villarreal, D-123, announces his resignation from the Texas State House of Legislation during a press conference, Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014. Villarreal's submitted his letter of resignation to Gov. Rick Perry and will be effective in January. Villarreal, who earlier in the year announced his race for mayor of San Antonio, was reelected to the position in the general elections last week. By resigning after the elections, a special election will be held instead of precinct chairs appointing a substitute.
Speculation about the makeup of the upcoming San Antonio mayoral race heated up Sunday as state Rep. Mike Villarreal decided to resign to devote himself full time to campaigning for the office, while state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte said she's "praying for guidance" about whether she should run for the seat.
