Philadelphia's got a list of local fashion designers who have decided to stay home rather than caravanning to fashion capitals like New York and Los Angeles. And now you can add another name to that list.
Huntingdon Valley, Pa. native Liz Rymar, designer and owner of ellelauri, is set to open her third location on Thursday at 114 S. 19th St. The 1,500-square-foot location will act as the brand's flagship store. Rymar signed a three-year lease to occupy the space. ( See photos of the space.)
"Besides the fact that I'm from here, my plan was always to come back to Philadelphia. My family's here, my sister's in Old City, and a lot of my friends grew up here," Rymar said.
The long list of talent moving to the city was also a signal that Philadelphia is becoming a go-to city.
"It's already building up so big in Philadelphia with all the new stores that are opening and construction going on. I just think it's a really exciting time, and we want to be a part of it," Rymar said. "There's a lot of great new boutiques that are coming, and Walnut Street ... looks like it could be in any major city. There's so much new construction and new stores coming in. … Fashion here is really making a name for itself."
Rymar will also be moving her design studio to a 3,800-square-foot space in Hatboro, Pa., where she's hoping to attract talent from Philadelphia.
ellelauri is launching at a time when Center City's retail scene is on fire, with new tenants coming in recently like Uniqlo, Michael Kors, Nordstrom Rack and Century 21, but Rymar doesn't see them as competition.
"It does nothing but help, especially being over [at our temporary pop-up location] in Liberty [Place,] we've just seen more traffic with the other clothing stores coming there," she said.
