‘Hunger Games’ Coming to the Stage in London

LOS ANGELES — Katniss Everdeen, having conquered books and movies, will next bring her survival skills to the stage.

Lionsgate on Friday announced a deal to mount “The Hunger Games” as a theatrical “experience” in London. The movie studio said that the stage adaptation, set to open in a newly constructed theater next to Wembley Stadium in summer 2016, will be produced by Robin de Levita, known for Broadway hits like “Urinetown” and a Tony Award-winning revival of “Into the Woods” in 2002.

Lionsgate provided no additional details. Mr. de Levita has recently generated headlines for an unusual production in the Netherlands that tells the story of Anne Frank using rotating sets and enormous 180-degree screens that show imagery as actors perform. “The theater is a fantastic medium to bring the many meaningful layers of Suzanne Collins’s writing to life,” Mr. de Levita said in a statement.

Ms. Collins is the author of “The Hunger Games” books, which depict a post-apocalyptic world in which teenagers are forced to hunt other teenagers for the amusement of society. The books have sold 80 million copies worldwide; Lionsgate’s two film adaptations have taken in more than $1.5 billion at the box office. The next film, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” arrives on Nov. 21.
