"Truthland" Has The Facts You Didn’t See In "Gasland"

On Saturday, June 16, the documentary film “Truthland” will make its first official screening to audiences in Columbus, Ohio, followed by a 35-stop screening tour across more than 12 U.S. states. “Truthland” comes as a response to the 2010 Josh Fox documentary film “Gasland,” a film that skewed audience’s beliefs about natural gas drilling.

On April 27, 2012, the Railroad Commission of Texas announced that it has grant funds available for public fleets. The grant money, which totals $700,000, would be used to assist school districts and cities, for example, if they purchase new low-emission natural gas vehicles for their fleets.

A Dallas-based company, AmericaCNG, announced this month that they will be equipping 300 Roady’s Truck Stops with natural gas fueling equipment. This comes on the heels of a recent announcement by Clean Energy Fuels to install natural gas fueling equipment at 250 Pilot and Flying J truck stops nationwide.

There are many positive characteristics of natural gas, the main benefit being that natural gas is the lowest-carbon fuel. The numerous advantageous aspects of natural gas have long been recognized. For instance, the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels & Advanced Vehicles Data Center says that CNG (compressed natural gas) is 26% less carbon-intensive than gasoline.

Here is a sad, but true, fact: there are more than 13 million natural gas powered cars and trucks in the world, and only 112,000 of those are in the United States. This is even more disturbing considering President Obama appealed to his audience in his 2012 State of the Union address that “We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years.” The U.S. has over 100 years of natural gas within its borders thanks to shale gas development, most notably, the Barnett Shale in North Texas.

A growing use for natural gas is as a transportation fuel. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is used in cars and trucks and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is used in over-the-road tractor-trailer trucks. According to the Green Car Journal, natural gas is a clean fuel that is almost exclusively domestically sourced and is typically priced 30% less than gasoline. It also fast fills in about five minutes at fueling stations that offer natural gas dispensers.

EPA Chief Lisa Jackson says natural gas production is "a good thing"

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) told a House committee on May 24 that she favored natural gas production and said she didn’t know of any “proven case” in which hydraulic fracturing had affected drinking water. Jackson went on to say that natural gas creates less air pollution than other fossil fuels “so increasing America’s natural gas production is a good thing.”
