Fresenius division to buy Brentwood-based Cogent Healthcare

Brentwood-based Cogent Healthcare has agreed to be sold to a division of Fresenius Medical Care.

According to a news release, the deal between Cogent and Fresenius' Washington-based Sound Physicians Inc. is expected to close this quarter. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Through 650 providers, Cogent offers hospitalist and intensivist services at more than 80 U.S. hospitals. With its purchase of Cogent, Sound will serve 180 hospitals in 35 states, with more than 2,250 providers.

Cogent is expected to generate about $250 million in revenue in 2015.

"With this acquisition, Sound Physicians continues to augment our network of dialysis, cardiac and vascular care centers, renal pharmacy and full service and specialty laboratories to help us better address the full spectrum of our patients' health care needs. Going forward, Sound will be better positioned than ever to deliver the highest quality care to patients in the acute setting and reduce costs for its hospital partners."
