The trial period for food trucks on the beach in St. Augustine has been extended, with conditions, according to the St. Augustine Record.
The St. Augustine Beach Commission extended the original ordinance, permitting the food trucks to stay, but also added five stipulations to ease the transition.
Under the new conditions, there can only be four trucks on the beach at a time and they must be located at least 70 feet away from an established restaurant. In addition, the trucks must be removed from the location at midnight.
The ordinance will be discussed again at the December meeting, with the chance of permitting food trucks to stay on the beach until at least September 2015.
Food trucks have become a heated issue in St. Augustine, pitting brick-and-mortar restaurants against the trucks, which are seen as having an unfair advantage because of lower operating costs.
