AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - Chris Dorn voted for Democrat Wendy Davis. But he still wishes Republican Greg Abbott well as the state’s new Governor. “I’m always willing to give anybody a chance,” Dorn said.
At a news conference Wednesday morning at the State Capitol, Abbott said that he’s done celebrating. “It is time to put the election behind us and to begin a process of going to work,” he said.
The Governor-elect spoke with Dan Patrick, Lt. Governor-elect by phone. Abbott said that the two discussed “looking at ways we can provide some level of tax relief,” but he did not give specifics. Abbott also had lunch with House Speaker Joe Straus.
Abbott repeated his main priorities when he enters office: Building more roads and finding more water for the state’s growing population, and taking additional steps to secure the border. “That includes adding more public safety officers,” Abbott said. “It means adding more Texas Rangers. It means providing more resources and funding for local law enforcement.”
The Governor-elect also said that he wants to keep Texas the number one state for jobs. But he wants to re-evaluate the Texas Enterprise Fund after questions surfaced about the fund’s transparency. For years, Gov. Rick Perry has spent millions of state dollars in the fund to attract businesses. Abbott said, “Government shouldn’t be in the business of picking between winners and losers.”
Abbott also hopes to make Texas the best state when it comes to public schools. Chris Dorn likes that. “I think we definitely need to give the teachers tools to better educate our kids,” Dorn said.
The State Legislature will convene January 13. But Abbott and Patrick will not be sworn in until January 20. Outgoing Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst will preside over the Senate for the first week.
