A bill that would allow states and local governments to collect sales tax on Internet sales by businesses located outside their borders will not pass in this session of Congress.
PCWorld reports the Main Street Fairness Act has passed in the Senate. However, Speaker of the House John Boehner, who opposes the plan, is refusing to take it up.
Under current law, online retailers must only collect and remit sales taxes to governments when they have a physical presence in the place where the buyer lives. Some brick-and-mortar retailers have called for sales tax on all online transactions.
