Jerry Jones on sideline trip: 'I told Jason that [Romo] would be back'

During Monday night's Cowboys-Redskins game, Tony Romo suffered a back contusion. At the time it looked much worse than it initially was; Cowboys fans in AT&T Stadium waited with baited beer breath to see whether Romo was seriously injured.

He wasn't and the franchise quarterback ultimately returned, a surprising move for a 6-1 team in late October. There was plenty of sideline debate about Romo's return ... or was there? Jerry Jones said later he "told Jason" Garrett that Romo "would be back in."

“I was here during the tail end of the examination and knew he planed to come back out and play if he were needed,” Jones said per Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Of course he was needed. I felt good that he could come back out. When he saw the opportunity he did. I told Jason that he would be back in."

Jerry didn't mention how he predicted the injury in the first place though.

To the objective person watching the game last night, it was crazy to put Romo back in the game. He's 34 years old and coming off back surgery. Why would you risk aggravating his injury and putting your entire season at risk over a Monday win against the Redskins? Brandon Weeden was fine. Run the ball with DeMarco Murray, play defense against Colt McCoy and steal an overtime win.

Or not.

“We knew there were no structural issues when they gave him the X-rays,” Jones said. “I was very concerned by the fact that he laid there as long as he laid there. After we looked at the play and saw that was a knee kind of to the side of the back, then we felt better about it.

"We got him in here and looked at it real carefully everybody felt better about it. But he was certainly limited when he first got in here, but he loosened it up real good and went back out.”

It ended up being irrelevant. Romo played and the Cowboys still managed to lose the game. But at least they risked everything in doing it and managed to create a circus atmosphere on the sideline.
