Eight North Carolina companies snagged spots on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 – but only one cracked the top 50.

Morrisville-based marketing technology firm MaxPoint ranked No. 40.

Morrisville-based Issuer Direct Corporation (No. 263), Durham-based Bronto (No. 290), Raleigh-based Salix Pharmaceuticals (No. 297), Wake Forest-based PowerSecure (No. 370), Charlotte-based AvidXchange (No. 382), Morrisville-based SciQuest (No. 469) and Durham-based Cree (No. 479) round out the state's other contributions.

Last year, two local companies cracked the top 10: MaxPoint Interactive and BioDelivery Sciences International were Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.

The list is an annual ranking of the fastest growing North American companies in the technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology sectors. Rankings are based on percentage fiscal year revenue growth from 2009 to 2013. Software sticks out, with more than 230 companies from that space in the rankings.

The top five on the list? All but one are in California: MobileIron (California), Fuhu (California), Twilio (California), Phunware (Texas) and Apigee (California).
