National home builder Lennar is proposing a plan to build a 430-home subdivision in Cary on 100 acres of land that was formerly a brick manufacturing site.

The project is appropriately being called The Brickyard, according to site plans filed in Cary.

The Cary town council will hold a quasi-judicial public hearing tonight, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the project's plans, as well as two other applicants, including building plans for the new Green Level High School.

The Brickyard neighborhood site would be built is at the southeast corner of the intersection of N.C. 55 and N.C. 540/Triangle Expressway, just south of the N.C. 540 entrance ramp to the north.

Much of the property for several decades has been owned by Durham-based Triangle Brick Co., which used the property as a brick manufacturing plant. It is now closed. An additional 16 acres within the site is owned by Phillip Clayton of Morrisville and Floyd Douglass Nut of Oxford.

Lennar's plans include lots for 304 townhomes, 126 single family homes and a private, neighborhood amenity center. A future phase could also include a site for commercial development. The neighborhood is adjacent to the existing Breckenridge community.

The property is also near where American Asset Corp. plans to build a new Whole Foods grocery-anchored shopping center.

Both the Brickyard property and the Whole Foods retail site are located within the Alston Regional Activity Center, an area that the town was already pre-planned with rules for property uses, layout and design.
