Washington State Ferries said the ferry Tacoma, which suffered electrical problems this summer, will cost $1.8 million to repair and won't be back in service until summer 2015.
The Seattle Times reports repairs are taking much longer than expected because parts have to be imported from Germany.
The damage suffered by Tacoma was the result of design flaw that went undetected for 17 years.
The ferry serves Seattle-Bainbridge Island and Edmonds-Kingston routes.
