ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A Maryland county's board of education has voted to remove any reference to religion from its school calendar.
The Montgomery County Board of Education voted 7 to 1 Tuesday to take out religious holiday references like Christmas and Yom Kippur from the 2015-2016 calendar. Days off will remain unchanged.
The decision came after to Muslim leaders requested a day off for Eid al-Adha, a holiday at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, reports WUSA9.
School administrators say it's unconstitutional to make calendar decisions for religious reasons. Instead, they can only make operational decision like too many kids and staff absent for a holiday.
Administrators say absences have not spiked at Eid al-Adha even though Muslims make up about 10 percent of the county population.
