A Twitter friend recently tweeted me the infographic below (or, to be specific, the Renewable Energy Corporation webpage where it was posted). It’s quite interesting; though, in this “solar smackdown,” the beautiful state where I lived for one year (Virginia) doesn’t compare to Maryland when it comes to solar power, solar jobs, etc. Maybe some Virginians could spread this around enough to stimulate better solar policies (hint: share this infographic).

      If Maryland hadn’t created all those good green jobs their unemployed count would be even higher.

      And if Virginia had created more their unemployed count would be even lower.

      Score one for Virginia. One of the things I love about the Virginia/Maryland rivalry is that you could look at a totally different set of metrics and Virginia would win. I feel like these two states push and challenge each other, which is good for both economies and good for the people who live there.

    I totally agree that Virginia is seriously lagging. I have been thinking the same and I’m glad someone did the research to make the point. I am a VA resident and work in MD. I know that MD has the right policies and incentives to promote renewable and clean energy. VA should do the same. I hope my fellow Virginians start to demand that our policy makers start being more progressive in their outlook.

      I used to live in Virginia (Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax/Chantilly), and I was shocked when I saw the stats. I’ve always been proud of Virginia’s progressiveness when it comes to tech, job creation, etc. Surprise: Maryland is stealing Virginia’s lunch money when it comes to solar jobs!

    Pretty interesting to see this statistics. While it makes a lot of sense as to why California is so high, it is also good to see some less expected states take some measures to utilize this technology better. It has really made some impressive strides in the past few years!
