DALLAS (KRLD) — Halloween is almost upon us! There are plenty of spooky events and contests happening around the metroplex this weekend!
Here are some of the best!
– If you like watching plays and jacked up horror movies, this is for you. DCH Film Society presents the Improvised Horror Film Thursday night. A never before seen horror film, improvised live on stage, based on the audience’s suggestion. Complete with all the stereotypical horror movie characters and typical actions (running upstairs…not taking off high heels to run…etc.)
– This sounds pretty interesting. The Heard Museum has an exhibit that focuses on a bird that was once so numerous, that they obscured the sun when in flight. Now the bird has been extinct for 100 years. The Heard is participating in Project Passenger Pigeon, a nationwide program to bring the subject of conservation to the forefront. The museum is one of the few educational facilities in Texas with a Passenger Pigeon specimen in its collection, and the only one of such locations to display it during this national event.
– The Frontiers of Flight Museum’s new traveling exhibit titled “Victory From Within” details the American prisoner of war experience from the Civil War to modern conflicts. The exhibit was created by the National Park Service in cooperation with the American Ex-Prisoners of War and the Friends of Andersonville to give more Americans the opportunity to explore the American POW story.
– These guys have been around for while — you probably know their tune “Feel Good Drag”. You may not know that over the years, many have spent time trying to figure out if these guys are a Christian band. The guys say that they don’t care who listens to their records if it helps people in whatever circumstances they’re in. One of the guys said that his faith affects every single aspect of his life, but he’s not a preacher, he’s an entertainer. BTW, the guys say the band is breaking up after this tour, so if you want to see them, this is your last chance. See Anberlin and their Final Tour at the House of Blues Friday night.
– Friday night at Winstar, it is a band from Florida that got famous with a tune about Alabama. See Lynyrd Skynyrd.
– I don’t get stoked about many concerts, but this is one of them. Yes, I love Heart…especially their stuff that came out in 1985…but these guys were rocking my world at high school junior prom time. Yeah, Sister Christian was huge, but my faves were “Goodbye”, “When You Close Your Eyes”, “You Can Still Rock in America”, “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me’ and “Hearts Away” This is just the short list. See Heart along with Night Ranger Saturday night at the Verizon.
– I love this guy. He explains the science of cooking and he makes it interesting…first with Good Eats and then with Iron Chef. I didn’t know that in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was the cinematographer for several music videos, including REM’s “The One I Love”. I would have rather it had been a Winger or Tesla video, but it’s still cool. See Alton Brown Sunday at the Majestic Theater for The Edible Inevitable Tour.
– I’ll never forget the first time I saw these guys in concert. It was 1982, they opened for the GoGo’s, and my best friend won an arcade size Centipede game on a McDonalds scratch off on the way home. Relive your memories with A Flock of Seagulls this Sunday at Trees.
– Check out the band Casting Crowns this Saturday at College Park Center in Arlington.
– The Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering is this weekend at the Stockyards National Historic District in Fort Worth. A lot of stuff going…Wagon Train and Trail Ride from Jacksboro, Chuck Wagon Camp and Competition, Cowboy Poetry and Cowboy Music, Ranch Cutting Horse Assn. Rodeo Finals, Youth Fiddle Contest, Western Swing Dances and more.
– Hard to believe it has already been two years. The Klyde Warren 2nd Anniversary is being celebrated all week. This Saturday’s anniversary celebration is set for noon to 5p.
– The AT&T Performing Arts Center and the Dallas Film Society continues its 3rd year of Sunset Screenings at Annette Strauss Square in the Dallas Arts District. This year’s free outdoor movie screenings will feature award-winning films from definitive directors of the ‘80s: The Shining” directed by Stanley Kubrick is scheduled for this coming Sunday.
– This Saturday is the 2nd Annual Canal Fest, a celebration of food, music, and culture! There will also be tons of stuff to buy. Set along the beautiful Mandalay Canal, this festival includes a local art exhibit, cultural dance displays, family-friendly activities and attractions, live music, a variety of food and beverage options, and much more.
– Get your costumes ready for Fort Worth Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo this weekend! It is happening Friday through Sunday.
– Celebrate Halloween this weekend with the Dallas Zoo Halloween Nights. Friday through Sunday you and the kids can take a Pumpkin Patch Photo, take a ride on the Haunted Carousel and chow down on some S’mores.
– Now through November 2, you can experience an even scarier side of Six Flags Over Texas with Fright Fest. Fright Fest is the largest Halloween festival in North Texas, with Ghouls, goblins and zombies emerging each evening at 6 to haunt the park’s midways.
– If pumpkin carving doesn’t impress you, I suggest you head over to Sea Life Aquarium Grapevine for Underwater Pumpkin Carving. Yes! Highly trained divers dressed in costume will compete to see who can carve the best jack-o-lantern… UNDERWATER!
– Here is another twisted twist on the whole haunted house thing. Strangling Brothers Haunted Circus promises to freak you out with its terrifying Semi-Trailers of Terror. Each of the twenty-nine custom designed tractor-trailers has a different scary scenario.
– The Boneyard Haunted House in Arlington says this year’s haunted house is even bigger with more fear and terror.
– The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden celebrates Autumn at the Arboretum, one of the Southwest’s largest fall festivals, featuring the nationally acclaimed Pumpkin Village with four storybook themed pumpkin houses, a race around White Rock Lake, fall foliage and plenty of events. – Now through November 1, head over to Elm Street to the Slaughter House for 16 thousand square feet of pure terror. Come on. The thing is on Elm Street. That in and of itself makes it worth the trip.
– The Denton Haunted House also known as The Parker House Haunted Attraction is open this weekend through November 1 for your scaring pleasure. The story goes that this 1940’s home based mortuary was closed down by the FBI due to the Parker’s daughter Mary who created her own bodies for the morgue.
– Screams Halloween Theme Park unveils the terror of the big top at the all new CarnEvil Clown Maze and the Castle of Darkness. Check it out every Friday and Saturday night in October through Halloween Night, Friday October 31. Get more details by clicking on the link above.
– Dark Hour Haunted House 2014 is looking to be full of witches. The Plano haunted house features witches from every country, each infamous throughout the world for the horrors they reap.
– Cutting Edge Haunted House is open in Fort Worth for all your ghoulish pleasure.
– Hangman’s House of Horror in Fort Worth is under new ownership and in a new location…so if you saw this thing last year…you are in for a scary surprise this year.
– It is year number 5 for Moxley Manor Haunted House. They have been voted one of North Texas’ top haunted houses.
– Explore the Texas Rangers’ stadium with a Halloween-themed ballpark tour at Globe Life Park in Arlington now through Nov. 1.
– Thrillvania Haunted House Park is east of Dallas in Terrell, Texas. This deal has 4 haunted attractions.
– They say this haunted house is surrounded by haunted woods and sinister waters. Check out Creekside Manor.
– For Halloween, Ripley’s is hosting a haunted house attraction called Ripley’s Nightmare at the Wax Museum and a haunted maze called Ripley’s Haunted Mirror Maze.
– In Fort Worth, you can get the daylights scared out of you at Zombie Manor.
– Reindeer Manor says it is the oldest haunted attraction in Texas and one of the oldest continuously-running haunts in the world, opening in 1974 on 33 acres in Red Oak, Texas.
– Dan’s Haunted House is not the usual haunted house. This new attraction is inspired by Japanese horror films and Japanese folklore and legends.
– If you want to combine Halloween with an educational experience, check out Murder and Mayhem: True Crimes of Collin County tomorrow at Heritage Farmstead Museum in Plano. You’ll learn about the more sinister side of Collin County history, the infamous crimes and notorious characters that helped shape the area.
– The Monster Dash is set for Saturday Oct 25 Panther Island Pavilion. Even if you are not a runner, you should go just to see the costumes.
– The Fall Festival in the Japanese Garden is happening this Saturday and Sunday at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.
– Howl-O-Ween at Old City Bark is set for this Sunday (10/26) from noon to 4p at Dallas Heritage Village. They’ll have a pet costume contest for pet only, pet and adult, and pet and child categories.
– Bull-O-Ween with Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue is happening in Frisco Saturday evening. There will be a costume contest and goody bags for the first 100 attendees.
– In Plano this Saturday, you can check out Howl-oween at Katy Trail Ice House Outpost patio. Bring your furry baby for a canine costume contest benefiting the Operation Kindness grooming fund.
– Then on Sunday, you can join Operation Kindness at the elegant Omni hotel in Dallas for Canines, Cats & Cabernet! You’ll enjoy complimentary wine all evening and a spectacular dinner that includes a freakin’ mashed potato and mac and cheese bars.
– Downtown Dallas is the place to be this Saturday from 10 to 2 for North Texas Pit Bull Pride at Main Street Garden. This party pitties and their people will include a costume contest, the Pittie Pride Parade, a disc dog demo and more.
– Sunday from 11 to 4, check out Pug-O-Ween at the Grapevine Convention Center. They’ll have a rescue pug parade, costume contests for pugs and more.
– If you dig dogs…especially Basset Hounds…you must attend the annual Bassett Hound Shuffle at Chisolm Park in Hurst this Saturday morning. Some of the competitions include longest ears, howling) and “lowest rider.” A male and a female Basset will be crowned King and Queen and lead the Shuffle Parade through the park.
