Change Hangouts settings on Android

You can change your Hangouts status and notifications, as well as block specific people from calling or sending you messages. You can also hide or unhide contacts, and change other Hangouts settings.

You can also create default settings for all Hangouts, specific Hangouts, or for specific people or groups.

Settings you can access from the main Menu

You can change some settings from the main Menu, like sharing your mood and turning off notifications.

  1. Open the Hangouts app on your Android device.
  2. Touch your profile photo.
  3. Choose the following setting you want to change:

Invites

See any invites you have.

Archived Hangouts
See your old Hangouts conversations here.
Blocked people
See a list of all the people you've blocked. When you block someone:

To unblock someone, touch Unblock next to their name.

Snooze notifications
If you're unavailable to talk, like when you're in a meeting or while you're driving, you can turn on snooze notifications. You can choose to snooze notifications for 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, or 72 hours.
Set mood
Choose what mood you're in. To remove your mood, touch Reset mood. If you don't remove your mood, it'll automatically be cleared in 24 hours.
Settings
You can change your general settings for the Hangouts app and text messages here.

You can read help articles to understand how to use the Hangouts app better. You can also send feedback about Hangouts to Google. This can include any comments, suggestions, or technical issues.
  1. Touch Include system data to share your device's information with Google. This is important to include if you're writing about a technical issue so that we have the information to solve the problem.

Change your general Hangouts app settings

You can change the general settings for the app, like sounds for notifications, what status you share, or temporarily turning off notifications.

  1. Open the Hangouts app on your Android device.
  2. Touch your profile photo.
  3. Touch Settings.
  4. Select your account.
  5. Choose the setting below you want to change:
Profile photo
Your Google+ profile photo is what shows on your Hangouts profile. You can take a photo or choose one from your albums.
Share your status

By sharing your status, you can let people see your mood, show which device you're on, or whether you're on a video or phone call.

Keep in mind, whatever status you choose to share on one device, that status will also apply to other devices you sign in to with your Hangouts account.

  • Set your mood: Choose what mood you're in. To remove your mood, touch Reset mood. If you don't remove your mood, your mood will automatically be cleared in 24 hours.
  • Device: Check to show which device (phone, tablet, or computer) you're currently on. Uncheck this box to stop sharing this.
  • In call: Check to share whether you're in a video or phone call on any of your devices. Uncheck this box to stop sharing this.

Hangouts messages & invites

Turn notifications on or off for messages and invites. You can choose whether you want your device to vibrate for  notifications and which kind of sound you want to hear.

Video calls

Turn notifications on or off for video calls. You can choose whether you want your device to vibrate for video calls and which kind of sound you want to hear.

Google Voice

Messages
Touch the checkbox if you want your Google Voice text messages and voicemails to show in Hangouts so that they're all in one location.
Incoming phone calls
Touch the checkbox if you want Hangouts to ring for incoming phone calls to your Google Voice number.
Google Voice SMS
Turn notifications on or off for your Google Voice account's text messages. You can choose whether you want your device to vibrate for the text messages and which kind of sound you want to hear.
Google Voice Voicemail
Turn notifications on or off for your Google Voice account's voicemails. You can choose whether you want your device to vibrate for the voicemails and which kind of sound you want to hear.

Customize invites

You can choose who can start a Hangout with you without sending an invite by customizing invitations by Circles.

Account

Google+ profile

Go to your Google+ profile for the Hangouts account that you're using.

Confirm phone number

You can confirm your phone number. Once you've confirmed your phone number, people will be able to use your phone number to connect with you through Google services like Hangouts.

Blocked people

See a list of all the people you've blocked. When you block someone:

To unblock someone, touch Unblock next to their name.

Hidden contacts
See the contacts that you've hidden. To unhide a contact, touch Unhide next to their name.
Sign out
Touch this to sign out of Hangouts. This will only sign you out of Hangouts on this device. If you're signed in to Hangouts on other devices, you'll need to sign out of each device.
Improve Hangouts
To help improve Hangouts, touch the checkbox to opt in to send your data to Google about how you use Hangouts. This won't send any of your private information.

Change settings for individual Hangouts

You can change settings for a Hangout that you're having with one person.

  1. Open the Hangouts app on your Android device.
  2. Go to your Hangouts list.
  3. Open a new or existing Hangout.
  4. Touch Menu .
  5. Choose the setting you want to change.

You can change the following settings in the menu:

People & Options

Notifications: If you don't want to be notified of new messages or video calls for this Hangout, uncheck the box next to “Notifications.”

Chat message sound: Choose the type of sound you want to hear when you get a message from this Hangouts and text conversation.

Call ringtone: Choose the ringtone you want to hear when you receive a call from the person.

Block person: Block the person from contacting you on Hangouts. When you block a contact, you won't receive direct messages and notifications, but the person will still be present in any group Hangouts you have in common. If you block a number from Hangouts, text messages from that phone number to your Google Voice number will be blocked in both Google Voice and Hangouts. This will only work if you've turned on Google Voice SMS and voicemails in Hangouts. If you want to block calls from a phone number to your Google Voice number, you need to block it in your Google Voice account. Calls and text messages sent to directly to your phone aren't blocked. You can unblock someone by touching your profile photo > Settings > Blocked people. If you only want to remove someone from your Hangouts list, you can hide them by touching and holding on their name. Then touch Hide contact. This won't delete the contact, but hide them from your view. You can also block people or spam when you get a Hangout invite or report abuse for spamming.

People in this Hangout: Touch the circle next to this person's name to see which Circle this person is in or to add the person to a circle.

New group Hangout

You can quickly start a new group Hangout from any one-on-one Hangout.

  1. Touch New group Hangout.
  2. Select the participants.
  3. Touch OK.
  4. A Hangout window will open, and you can send a new message. Start a video call by touching the video call icon at the top of the group Hangout window.
Turn history on

Touch this to control whether you would like to save your Hangouts conversation with this person. Your Hangout history is saved by default. For Google Apps accounts, your domain administrator can change this default setting. Messages sent while Hangout history is turned on will be saved, even if history is later turned off. To turn it off, touch the toggle button so it switches to white. Keep in mind that if you're talking to someone who is connected to the network with a different desktop chat client, it's possible that their software is keeping a separate copy of the history.

Archive

Archive your Hangout. When you archive a Hangout, it won't show in your Hangouts list anymore.

You can see the conversation from Menu  > Archived.
Delete

Delete your Hangout. You won't be able to restart or recover your Hangout once you delete it. If you want to see your Hangout's history, you can see it as long as the history setting was on during the time of the conversation.

Change settings for Group Hangouts

The settings you can change for Group Hangouts are similar to those for individual hangouts, except that you can't delete a Hangout or block someone.

  1. Open the Hangouts app on your Android device.
  2. Go to your Hangouts list.
  3. Open an existing group Hangout
  4. Touch Menu .
  5. Choose the setting you want to change.

You can change the following settings in the menu:

People & Options

Rename: Name your Hangout. You also can change or remove the name at any time.

Notifications: Check this box to turn on notifications for this Hangout.

Chat message sound: Choose the type of sound you want to hear when you get a message from this Hangouts and group text message conversation.

Call ringtone: Choose the ringtone you want to hear when you receive a call from the person.

People in this Hangout: See who's in this Hangout. Touch the circle next to this person's name to see which Circle this person is in or to add the person to a Circle.

Add people

You can add more people to the current Hangout. Anyone you add can see all previous messages in this Hangout.

Turn history on

Touch this to control whether you would like to save your Hangouts conversation with this person. Only messages sent while Hangout history is turned off won't be saved.

Archive

Archive your Hangout. When you archive a Hangout, it won't show in your Hangouts list anymore. You can see the conversation from Menu  > Archived.

Leave

Leave the group Hangout. When you leave the group Hangout, you'll no longer get notifications of new messages or be able to read or send messages to the group.
