As the night lengthened on Tuesday, the real contest, it seemed, was to find a fitting description as to how thoroughly Democrats were taken to the woodshed both in Texas and nationally.
Republicans made a clean sweep of the statewide executive offices, as was expected. And they flipped the state Senate seat that belongs to defeated Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis, bringing Republicans to a single vote of a supermajority in the chamber.

2014 was never the big "get" for Battleground Texas. They've always been about laying the foundation going into 2016 and beyond. Davis declaring her candidacy was serendipitous timing, but was never the goal.
That said, Davis won among voters 44 and under and Black and Latina women. This is a good blueprint for how to move forward. Our state party has a lot of work to do, but that was always going to be the case. Eventually we'll get there.

Abbott's win is decidedly subversive for the state of Texas. I cannot comprehend how a man who's ethics are so irrefutably corrupt; profits from the pain and death of other human beings, was able to pollute and insinuate himself to be elected by fraudulent and iniquitous means. Wendy Davis was never being investigated by the FBI, that was lie. Abbott didn't have anything to run on, no policy, no issue; he had a lot of "No." No expansion of Federal Funded Medicaid, No to Equal pay for Equal Work, No to Women Health Centers just for the purpose of preventative care. Texas' Education is very near the bottom in the nation, if you recall, to bring Texas into the upper echelons, the state would have to spend $11,000 per student. Abbott's brilliant (sarcasm) plan is to spend only $5,000 per student and according to him, kinder-3rd grade are the grades of the up most important. It's where Texas students learn the fundamentals. Dangerous talk, extremely Dangerous Talk, this is the road to private schools. The state still hasn't fixed the legal issues of school funding. The school districts that are more affluent are receiving more funds than the less fortunate. If there were more private schools, what happens to public school's highly qualified teachers?
Finally, Battleground Texas just got started. This was our first election. Demographics in Texas Are Changing. We aren't going anywhere. We start again January becoming a Deputy Voter Registrar because we know Texas is not a Republican stronghold. It's been gerrymandered, it's voter id laws has disenfranchised many eligible voters, but most importantly, and this is what keeps Republicans awake at night, it's a non-voting state. The goal of Battleground Texas is to get those not currently voting to the polls and it's their votes that will make Texas blue and stay blue.
