NASA Orion Spacecraft Begins Historic Trip to Launch Pad
Nov. 11, 2014: At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the agency's completed Orion spacecraft begins its trip from the Launch Abort System Facility to Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. After arrival at the launch pad, United Launch Alliance engineers and technicians will lift Orion and mount it atop its Delta IV Heavy rocket.

ESA Rosetta Comet Mission: NAVCAM Top 10 at 10 km – 8
This scene presents a dramatic view across the body of the large lobe of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Along the horizon a relatively broad, raised portion of material appears to be abruptly truncated in the top left. Zooming into either side of the inner portion of the wall suggests the presence of slightly brighter material – perhaps more recently exposed than other sections.. Although cast in shadow, the sides of the raised section shows signs of clear layering, along with fractures cross-cutting in many orientations.

In the foreground, several large angular blocks are seen, some with faces that appear brighter than the surrounding material. In the background, a faint stream of gas and dust can be seen, showing that an active region is nearby.

This single-frame NAVCAM image measures 1024 x 1024 pixels. It was captured from a distance of 9.8 km from the center of the comet (about 7.8 km from the surface) at 18:08 GMT on October 26, 2014. At this distance, the image resolution is 83.7 cm/pixel and the size of the image is 857 x 857 m.

Rosetta & Philae Comet Landing Timeline | ESA
What does Philae do during descent? A timeline of the most crucial activities related to separation, descent and landing on November 11th and 12th, 2014. Rosetta's distance from Earth 511 million km!

This timeline has been compiled with inputs from the Flight Control Team at ESOC and the Science Operations Team at ESAC and is accurate as of now. PLEASE remember: many of these times are subject to change and confirmation, given the extremely dynamic nature of this delicate and complex operation. We'll do our best to update this as we receive firm information, but on November 12 the live webcasts from ESA TV and ESA's social media accounts will be the best ways to get the latest information.

Admittedly, this timeline is a little dense, but we thought it better to provide more detail for those who—like us!—are extreme Rosetta & Philae fans (and you know who you are!).

Philae Lander's Descent to Comet 67/P: View #1 | Rosetta Mission
This image of comet 67P/CG was acquired by the ROLIS instrument on the Philae lander during descent on Nov 12, 2014 14:38:41 UT from a distance of approximately 3 km from the surface. The landing site is imaged with a resolution of about 3m per pixel.

The ROLIS instrument is a down-looking imager that acquires images during the descent and doubles as a multispectral close-up camera after the landing. The aim of the ROLIS experiment is to study the texture and microstructure of the comet's surface. ROLIS (ROsetta Lander Imaging System) is a descent and close-up camera on the Philae Lander. It has been developed by the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, Berlin. The lander separated from the orbiter at 09:03 GMT (10:03 CET) and touched down on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko seven hours later.

At 8:54 p.m. EST Tuesday, the Orion spacecraft began its 22 mile trek from the Launch Abort System Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

A little after 10 p.m., the spacecraft will stop in front of Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building. Orion is expected to reach Space Launch Complex 37 at approximately 2 a.m., Wednesday, and be hoisted on top of the United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket later in the morning.

Orion is in the final stages of preparation for its uncrewed flight test, targeted for Dec. 4, that will take it 3,600 miles above Earth on a 4.5 hour flight that will test many of the systems critical for future human missions into deep space. After two orbits and nearly 60,000 miles, Orion will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at almost 20,000 mph before its parachute system deploys to slow the spacecraft for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. On future missions, the Orion spacecraft will send astronauts farther into the solar system than ever before, including to an asteroid and on the journey to Mars.

Pictured here is the Orion spacecraft in front of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
