Last week a #Texas jury decided that Trinity Industries, the manufacturers of guardrails, has to pay $175 million for making false claims to federal regulators about the safety of the guardrail end caps.

The guardrails are claimed to absorb the impact if hit by a vehicle by peeling the guardrail to the side. However, in crash tests it shows that the guardrails instead pierce the vehicle. 

This lawsuit comes after a guardrail sheared off a man’s right leg during a crash and after a guardrail crushed a 4 year old during another crash. As of now, the guardrails are still federally approved and it is too costly to remove them across the state. The Federal Highway Administration has ordered further testing which will determine what the next steps are.

The #Houston TranStar has reported that the number of incidents on area freeways have reached a record high of 2,101 this past September. Comparing this to May’s number of 1,579, the rate has skyrocketed.  #Accidents and stalls make up about 90% of these roadway incidents. Roads with the most accidents include the Sam Houston Tollway, Interstate 45 North and South of the central business district, and U.S. 59 Southwest of the central business district.
