Ten million dollars has been approved to design a bike path on the western span of the Bay Bridge, but actually building it will require $400 million. The two-mile path would go from San Francisco to Yerba Buena.

"This $10 million is to get to what is known as the 30 percent design level: A bicycle, pedestrian, and maintenance path on the west span of the Bay Bridge," Toll Authority spokesperson John Goodwin told KGO Radio.

A path on the eastern side of the bridge is already being built, and is expected to be complete by Labor Day, officials said. The western portion is still waiting on receiving complete funding. Cycling advocates would like to see a path that spans the entire bridge.

The Bay Bridge bike path's expansion comes as Golden Gate Bridge officials weigh charging a toll to cyclists and pedestrians to cross that bridge.
