VANCOUVER, Wash. (CBS Seattle) – Vancouver police mistakenly shot a man who called 911 to report a shooting suspect.

A man had called police to tell them that he spotted John Kendall.  A manhunt was underway for Kendall.  Deputies say he shot his neighbor earlier in the morning.

The Vancouver Police Department was able to GPS locate Kendall’s cellphone.

When the SWAT team arrived, they noticed a man fitting Kendall’s description.  They had no idea that the man who called 911 was still in the area.

“Law enforcement personnel watched as the citizen, who believed to be Kendall, exited his vehicle and circled behind his trunk,” a spokesperson from the police department told NWCN.  “Fearing that he armed himself, law enforcement fired multiple shots at the individual in order to stop the perceived threat before the citizen couldn’t enter the woods.”

Police shot the man in the leg.  He was able to take cover and retaliate with a shot of his own.  He called 911 again but this time to report that he was shot.

Officers provided first aid to the man until he arrived at a local hospital.

According to a police statement, Kendall was found dead nearby with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The neighbor that Kendall shot is currently in the hospital with critical injuries to her face.  She faces the possibility of losing her right eye.
