CHICORA (KDKA)- A two-alarm fire forced a man and his dog out of a Butler County home early Thursday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started around 12:30 a.m. at a home on South Main Street in Chicora.

When firefighters arrived, flames were sweeping through the house.

“The fire station is only about two blocks away,” said Chicora Fire Chief Jason Miller. “Upon our arrival, the second story was already fully involved, part of the first floor was already fully involved. All the residents of the house were already outside, so we went into a defensive mode.”

Firefighters used hand-lines on the ground and a ladder truck to fight the flames from the air.

They also worried about the fire spreading to a house next door.

“Just the close proximity of the next house, fire was starting to get close, so we got a hand-line on it and got it cooled down right away,” said Chief Miller.

The fire was under control around 2 a.m.

Officials said the man and dog who escaped the fire will have to find another place to stay for now.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials said it may have started in a wood-burner inside the home.
