The car made its way about 10 blocks before police said it collided head on with a Chevy Traverse driven by a 46-year-old man near East 23rd Street.

Moments later, police said the Kia then slammed into a Honda Pilot driven by a 41-year-old man.

Sarah Williams heard the impact from her home in Waterside Plaza.

“I heard the boom and then you see the impact,” she told WCBS 880′s Paul Murnane. “Looked scary.”

The Kia’s driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition with a head injury. Her 28-year-old passenger and the two drivers of the SUVs were also hospitalized in stable condition.

Police are still trying to determine what caused the Kia driver to travel the wrong direction on the FDR and are looking into whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role, CBS2′s Janelle Burrell reported.

The roadway was closed for about two hours as police investigated.
