NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The Yankees have called the Angels about second baseman Howie Kendrick, according to CBSSports.com/WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman.

The Halos aren’t looking to part with the former All-Star, though they would trade him for the right pitcher, Heyman reported. The Blue Jays, among other teams, have also inquired about Kendrick.

Heyman reports that despite taking calls, the reigning American League West champions are more than likely to hold onto the 31-year-old this offseason.

Martin Prado is expected to start the season at second base for New York, though shortstop and third base are question marks. There is currently no replacement on the roster for Derek Jeter, and general manager Brian Cashman is reportedly working on re-signing Chase Headley.

It remains to be seen what Alex Rodriguez, who missed all of 2014, will be able to do defensively when he returns next season.

Kendrick, a Yankee killer throughout his career, has never played shortstop in the majors and played third base just once back in 2006. He does, however, have experience playing first base and left field.

The right-handed hitter put up solid numbers in 2014, batting .293 with seven homers and 75 RBIs in 157 games. He also stole 14 bases and got on base at a .347 clip.
