Gainesville has been rated as one of the best places in the nation for veterans, according to a survey commissioned by USAA.

The north Florida city was rated as the eighth best city for military retirement, earning high marks for its strong economy, scenic environment and quaint southern culture.

With unemployment lower than the national average, at 5.5 percent, a relatively small population and an average home price of $127,500, Gainesville is described by the survey as a "right-sized college town," with proximity to the Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

Orlando also ranked among the best for military retirement, coming in at sixth based on its booming tourism industry and high military presence.
