UNT Greeks host book drive

It might have been a cold day, but that didn’t stop fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha, or PIKE, and sorority Pi Beta Phi from teaming up with Reading Partners Dallas to do a book drive for children.

“It’s sad when one out of four children don’t know how to read,” fashion merchandising freshman Macy Stover said. “Our chapter philanthropy is about literacy, that’s why we are doing the book drive.”

PIKE and Pi Phi were out all day behind the food tent taking money donations for the book drive. When the drive ends at 3 p.m. Nov. 12, they will give the money to Reading Partners Dallas. The organization then buys books for children in an effort to help children learn to read.

PIKE and Pi Phi have members asking students as they walk past if they want to donate as upbeat music plays.

“It’s funny, when we didn’t have music we didn’t get any donations,” electrical engineering junior Eric Mercado said. “After we added the music, we started getting donations. It was weird, but music gives the book drive vibe.”

The book drive is a new fundraiser all PIKE fraternity chapters are doing this year.

“The book drive is going pretty well,” engineering junior Jordan Julius said. “We’ve had many people stop by and donate. People seem to donate more when they know where the money is going. They know it’s not going to just sit in a jar somewhere.”
