Abbott Makes First Nomination As Governor-Elect
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Republican Gov.-elect Greg Abbott has chosen a new Texas secretary of state in his first nomination since his landslide victory last week.
Abbott announced Tuesday that Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos will become the state’s chief elections official in January. Cascos is a Republican fixture in the predominantly Democratic Rio Grande Valley, where Abbott spent the past year heavily campaigning.
Abbott made a point of saying his visit to the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday was his first official trip since defeating Democratic Wendy Davis last week.
Hispanic outreach was a major goal for Abbott in his bid to replace Gov. Rick Perry.
Cascos will replace Nandita Berry, who was appointed by Perry appointed a year ago.
