American Dream in Reverse

American Dream in Reverse

By Jennifer Davis-Lamm

The Fairy Tale Lives of Russian Girls has a lot going on. It’s a tale of the American dream in reverse; a family that has emigrated to the U.S. and yet sends their daughter back to their homeland of Russia for a better opportunity. It’s also a fascinating look at the history of Russia, told by way of folklore, mingled with a fascinating peek into its modern sociological landscape with a punk rock, feminist twist. In lesser hands, that could probably give you a headache, but playwright Meg Miroshnik has managed a narrative that works on a lot of levels, giving the audience a peek into the Putin-era Russian mystique by way of fairy tale allegory — with heroines facing down storybook villains with real world corollaries. Undermain Theatre, 3200 Main St., takes on this funny and potent once upon a time tale beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Their adaptation runs through December 6 with shows on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30; Fridays and Saturdays at 8:15 p.m. and 2 p.m.; and performances on Saturdays beginning November 22. Tickets are $15 to $30; visit undermain.org.
