St. Cloud Cathedral Kills Snow Days

Is new technology going to eliminate snow days?

Scores of kids around the state had school cancelled due to Monday's snowstorm, leaving them free to sleep in, sit back, and enjoy a free extended weekend courtesy of Mother Nature.

Lazy students got an extra day to procrastinate writing that paper they put off all weekend, while others had a chance to go sledding, build a snow fort, or, more likely, sit inside while live-tweeting a Netflix binge.

Unfortunately for students at St. Cloud's Cathedral High School, that wasn't the case.

By 10 a.m. teachers had lesson plans up online and students were ordered to report remotely from their school-issued MacBook Airs.

"It just struck us one day, well why don't we just have school, everybody has their machine at home anyway," said Cathedral President Michael Mullin.

Teachers conducted virtual classroom sessions using a Google app, allowing school to continue without interruption. Cathedral was already planning to test its plot to kill snow day on November 21, but when Monday's snowstorm came school administrators decided to try it early.

"Every teacher but one had his or her lessons up in time and the students were there. We haven't really debriefed it yet, but all indications are it went well," said Mullin.

Mullin was thoughtful, but ultimately unapologetic when we asked him about being the architect of the demise of one of Minnesota students' most cherished events.

"I don't know if I feel bad, like with every other experience change is inevitable. I think you can still have the wonderful experience of the snow day and get some work done," he said. "Here's the tradeoff: You don't have to sit wondering for the next three months whether or not we'll have more school in June."

that's great for the private schools who charge lots of money for tuition and can afford to give every student a laptop or ipad.........and the internet access to boot.  i work for a school district where every student receives an ipad to use during the school year............however, not every student has internet access at home, so i really don't see this working across the board.  another great example of the digital divide.  some students at my school have a hard time completing assignments online due to a lack of internet access.....imagine what would happen if they were counted absent due to a lack of internet.  parents would go ballistic and rightfully so.  besides, i always thought snow days were our reward for living and dealing with all this inconvenient white stuff :-)

It's unfortunate that children born to parents with poor choices in schooling & religion have to suffer. That being said… God be praised, for secular snow days!

Snow days are the only thing preventing winter from total ball suckage.

Probably not. Unless all the schools provide computers and internet access to all students. Can't forget about those that are low-income.

Snow days are one of the memorable parts of being a kid!! I can see doing this when there have been too many snow days, but geez let the kids enjoy the last few years of adolescence before the real world starts. I loved Cathedral High School but I disagree with this!!! Great idea for kids missing too much school for illness,

Not all parents can afford laptops and IPads but this is a private and tuition schools so most of them can afford this and I know parents that can not even afford internet

I wish we would have had this when I was in high school. Not for the snow days but so that when I got sick and missed over 100 days between 10th and 11th grade I could have kept up easier and gotten better grades instead of falling behind and struggling to catch up.
