Enduring gratitude

Jonathon Littman, a frequent attendee of the Denton County Veterans Day ceremony at the Courthouse on the Square, said he attends for a couple reasons. “Because I like being free, [and] I appreciate the fact I had an opportunity to serve,” Littman said, noting his time on the U.S.S. Turner Joy in Vietnam.

Construction crews will erect new power lines near Kings Row in northeastern Denton in the coming weeks, one part of a $350 million upgrade to the city’s electric grid that will nearly double its capacity and is expected to touch many parts of the city.

Love, selflessness defined slain man

The old saying “cherish every moment with those you love” has new meaning for Ellen Johansen. The Flower Mound resident lost her husband of 39 years, Verland “Scott” Johansen, on Sept. 26 after he struggled for his life with a gunshot wound. Earlier that week he was on his way to a Frisco hotel, where he worked as a night manager, when he was shot while driving along Interstate 35E in Lewisville.

New districts keep towns on their toes

Fall in Denton County was once a time of year when fields of coastal hay, wheat and even peanuts lined U.S. Highway 380. Combines, tractors and truckloads of workers labored from sunup to sundown harvesting crops and taking them to market. Evenings were spent by the fire or on a neighbor’s front porch swapping tales until the Sandman arrived.

Voter missed election chance

Jay Prophet has voted in as many state, local and federal elections as he could over the years. But he wasn’t able to vote in Tuesday’s election. Prophet, 32, headed to the polls on Oct. 31, the last day of early voting, and waited in line nearly an hour — turnout was heavy at Sycamore Hall on the University of North Texas campus — with his Texas personal identification card at the ready.

Blotter: Man gets caught running away from officers

A man could not evade Denton police officers Wednesday night. Two Denton officers were on bike patrol in the 300 block of Fry Street when they noticed the odor of marijuana in the area. When the officers detained a man who was nearby, he became agitated and eventually ran. While on the run, the man tossed a small baggie that contained methamphetamine, according to a police report.

In the emotionally charged run-up to their lopsided victory on Tuesday, political organizers for Frack Free Denton and their allies employed some weird weaponry against their well-financed oil and gas industry adversaries.

Further fallout follows ban

Fallout continued at the state level over the landslide vote Tuesday that banned hydraulic fracturing in Denton city limits. During a media event sponsored by the Texas Tribune on Thursday morning in Austin, Christi Craddick, chairwoman of the Texas Railroad Commission, called the vote a disappointment.

It only took moments for a thief to make off with a Denton woman’s purse and diaper bag Wednesday. Denton police officers were called to the 2700 block of Hilcroft Avenue where the woman reported that the items were taken after she walked away from her vehicle for a few minutes.
