Les Cockrell: Organization to offer end-of-life information

The Denton Area Partnership for End-of-Life Care will host two free events Friday to offer information about advance directives and how to file for a medical power of attorney.

One event will begin at 10 a.m. in the third-floor community room of the Denton Regional Medical Center professional building, and the second will be at 2 p.m. in the Rio Grande conference room on the first floor of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton.

The sessions begin with a 30-minute presentation about advance directives and medical power of attorney. Experts will be available for individual discussion, and attendees will receive forms to complete a living will and a medical power of attorney. Notaries and witnesses will be available to finalize documents at no cost, and all attendees are asked to bring photo identification.

Denton Regional Medical Center is at 3535 S. Interstate 35E, and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton is at 3000 N. Interstate 35.

Annual Turkey Roll Bicycle Rally on the horizon

The 32nd annual Turkey Roll Bicycle Rally is scheduled for Nov. 22, and those who register online by Friday can save $5, event organizers said.

The cost will be $35 after Friday. Online registration continues until 5 p.m. Nov. 20.

Sponsored by the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis, the event supports community projects and youth activities.

Riders may choose from courses of 8, 29, 39, 52 and 68 miles in length. The club has tried to include routes for serious riders and for those who want to have an enjoyable outing, a club spokeswoman said. Helmets are required and the ride will be held rain or shine.

The rally will start and end at Denton’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St., with on-site registration starting at 7 a.m. on ride day. The ride will begin at 9 a.m.

Senior living center to host holiday market

Good Samaritan Society-Denton Village will host its annual holiday market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

The market will be in the west dining room and chapel and will feature some items made by residents and others offered by vendors, a spokeswoman said. A variety of holiday items will be featured.

Good Samaritan Society-Denton Village is at 2500 Hinkle Drive.

 

Denton County Genealogical Society to meet today

Members of the Denton County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. today for a presentation on Internet aids for family history research.

The meeting will be at Denton’s Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St. and will be preceded by refreshments and networking at 6:30 p.m.

Red Cross announces blood drive at Denton church

The American Red Cross has announced a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Denton’s St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 300 W. Oak St.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health are eligible to donate blood.

Corps slates focus groups for adult male boaters

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that adult male boaters between the ages of 20 and 60 can earn $75 by participating in focus group sessions on Sunday.

Two sessions are planned for men who don’t always wear a life jacket while boating or swimming. The sessions will be at the Lewisville Lake Office, 1801 N. Mill St. in Lewisville.

The first session is for 20- to 40-year-old participants and will begin at noon. The second session is for 40- to 60-year-old participants and will begin at 3:15 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Focus group participants do not have to own a boat but must be adult men who have been boating. Men interested in participating should call 618-301-0508 to register for one of the sessions. Space is limited.

 

Grief support program planned at area church

A GriefShare support program for anyone who has lost a loved one and is facing the holidays without that person is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Crossroads Bible Church, 8101 FM407 in Double Oak.

Free dental care set at Denton office Saturday

People in the Denton community will have the opportunity to receive free dentistry services at My Dentist on Saturday, according to an event press release.

A choice of a free cleaning or extraction will be provided per patient between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Anybody in need who is willing to wait is eligible, a staff member said.

The event is offered as part of Free Dentistry Day, a day dedicated to providing dental care to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance, the press release stated.

Holocaust survivor to speak at University of North Texas

Holocaust survivor Paul Kessler will speak about his experiences in a speech titled “Hidden Child of the Holocaust” at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the University of North Texas.

The lecture will be presented in Room 255 of the Eagle Student Services Center, 1147 Union Circle. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Kessler was 5 years old when the Nazi army entered Slovakia, where he was born, according to a press release. He and his mother survived the Holocaust, for a long period hiding in a hole dug by farmers, while his father was in one of the first groups to be sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Kessler recounts his Holocaust experience with the hope that it will influence others to speak out against hate and prejudice, the press release stated.

Environmental learning area plans Saturday activities

Visitors to the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area Saturday will have an opportunity to tour a restored log house and study the stars.

The Minor-Porter Log House, which is furnished with items that might have been found in a pioneer home in Denton County in 1870, will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Cost is the regular admission of $5 per person. Children younger than 5 are admitted free.

LLELA will host a “Stars on the Prairie” program from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ages 5 and older are invited. If the sky is cloudy, a night hike will be held. There is a $5 program fee for this activity in addition to the regular gate fee.

State park slates hikes, Dutch oven program

Hiking and Dutch oven cooking will be among the activities offered Saturday at the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park.

A “Flying Feathered Friends” hike, which will give participants an opportunity to look and listen for birds, is planned at 8 a.m. Bird watchers of all skill levels are welcome, and participants should meet at Pavilion 1.

A guided hike on the Vanishing Prairies Trail will be at 10 a.m. This hike will help participants learn more about birds and the various types of trees in the area. Participants should meet at Pavilion 1.

A program set for 12:30 p.m. will teach participants how to cook lunch in a Dutch oven, a cast iron pot with a lid. Participants should bring a spoon and a plate to sample the cooking and meeting in Pavilion 1.

Park admission costs $7 for those 13 and older. Staff members recommend that all visitors bring water, and hikers should wear sturdy shoes.

Community gearing up for Toys for Tots campaign

The 2014 Toys for Tots drive officially began Saturday and community organizations and volunteers are working to make this year’s effort a success.

Toy donation sites will open Nov. 20 at Golden Triangle Mall. Collection sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and at participating businesses from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Items must be new, unwrapped and in their original packaging. Toy guns and weapons cannot be accepted.

 

Don’t forget

The Denton Senior Center, 509 N. Bell Ave., will host its annual Blue Ribbon Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature handmade items for holiday gift-giving. There will be jewelry, knitted and crocheted items, wood creations, Christmas decorations and more, organizers said.
