Sustainable Sites

Sustainable Sites iconLow emission vehicle parking spaceChoosing a building's site and managing that site during construction are important considerations for a project’s sustainability.

The Operations Building at Pier G has implemented measures of this category through the following:

  • Project location does not include sensitive site elements and restrictive land type
  • A storm water management plan was implemented using acceptable Best Management Practices (BMPs) to capture and treat rainfall runoff prior to discharging into the harbor
  • A white "cool roof" was installed to reduce the "Heat Island Effect." This effect is the recognized phenomenon of increased temperature in microclimates that are predominantly constructed with dark roofing materials that trap and absorb heat throughout the day
  • Preferred parking spaces have been provided for employees and visitors who arrive via carpool or in a high-efficiency vehicle
  • Although not a measure for LEED certification, it should be noted that during construction a pollution prevention plan was employed to mitigate dust generation and protect the site against erosion
