Fat City was once known for late-night barrooms and strip clubs, utility-pole signs that scarred the sky and the sidewalk garbage bins that kept pedestrians away. But it's being scrubbed up by ambitious planners, and it has seen restaurants and shops move in while strip clubs and some bars have closed down.
On Nov. 15, the Metairie neighborhood gets its chance to preen. The Jefferson Chamber's Young Professionals group has organized the first Fat City Festival. The festival takes place from noon to 5 p.m. along Fat City's main drag, 18th Street from North Arnoult Road to Edenborn Avenue.

On Thursday, organizers announced the festival's line-up, which includes food trucks, face-painting and contests. Shoppers may browse a market of local art or pick up a T-shirt featuring the sparky new festival logo, designed by a local artist.
For music, the festival will kick off with the Archbishop Rummel High School band and the Grace King High School band. Also playing will be Bag of Donuts, the costumed quartet known for covering pop hits.
