Two pilots were killed when an Idaho Army National Guard Apache helicopter crashed just outside the Boise city limits Thursday night, officials said. The helicopter went down about two miles south of Gowen Field, where the Guard's 1st Battalion, 183rd Aviation Regiment, is based, and about 2½ miles south of Boise Airport, the Ada County Sheriff's Office said. The 183rd flies both AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and UH-60 Blackhawk utility aircraft. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
“The men and women of the Idaho National Guard are united in grief at the loss of two of our brothers in arms, who gave their lives while training to defend our nation,” said Idaho National Guard Commander Major General Gary Sayler. “Today, our thoughts and prayers are with their families.” It was the second U.S. military air crash of the day. Rescue crews were searching for an Air Force F-16 fighter jet that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico early Thursday. The body of the pilot — the only person on board — was later recovered in the Gulf.
