When TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin was at West Mesquite, he was usually listed in the recruiting rankings as “athlete.” Recruiters liked his athletic ability and smarts, but he was often projected as a slot receiver or defensive back.
But Mike Overton, who was the West Mesquite coach then and is now at Mesquite Horn, always spoke highly of what Boykin could do as a quarterback. When Boykin was 14 years old, Overton saw him throw and knew he had a quarterback.
“He made throws that kids at that age just don’t make,” Overton said in today’s Dallas Morning News story by Bill Nichols. “We knew he was going to be a quarterback. He just needed to improve his mechanics.”
I always enjoyed watching Boykin play at West Mesquite, where he was a supreme clutch-time performer. Here’s the rest of Nichols’ story on him.
