Marine held in Mexico on weapons charges says he felt vulnerable without guns

Marine reservist Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who spent 214 days behind bars in Mexico on weapons charges, says he often carried guns because he felt vulnerable and threatened since leaving active duty.

Tahmooressi, in an interview Thursday night with Fox News host Greta Van Susteren, said that it has been difficult transitioning to the civilian community from the Marine Corps.

"And it's easy to go from there to the civilian world carrying a gun around because, you know, you feel like ... people are after you," Tahmooressi said. "And it's just a different world from there to here. It's a totally different world."

Tahmooressi, 25, did two combat tours in Afghanistan. He has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and had moved to San Diego to get treatment for PTSD at the Veterans Affairs hospital in La Jolla.

Marines "have guns on them all the time," he said. "Our gun is our safety. So when you get here and you're vulnerable ... because you have all your boys there in the Marine...

Sewage spill closes two marinas in Huntington Harbour

Two marinas in Huntington Harbour were closed Thursday to swimmers and divers until further notice because of a sewage spill, Orange County health authorities said.

A backed-up pipe in Westminster sent about 1,000 gallons of raw sewage into a storm drain system that feeds into Huntington Harbour, said Larry Honeybourne, assistant director for the environmental health division of the Orange County Healthcare Agency.

The water at Sunset Aquatic Marina and Portofino Cove Marina hasn't been tested, but both were closed out of caution.

"The reality is a lot of people aren't going to be getting into that area," Honeybourne said. "Though sometimes divers will go in there to clean the bottoms of boats."

Honeybourne said the water will be tested Friday and Saturday, and the closure will be lifted once the bacteria levels return to acceptable levels.

The handcuffed woman was put in the back of a CHP vehicle, officials said, but she managed to slip out of the restraints and drive away. The officer was outside of the vehicle looking at the woman's damaged car.

As she began to tug on a rifle in the front seat of the CHP vehicle, the CHP officer fired several shots.

As she drove away, dozens of CHP and San Diego police officers gave chase. The chase ended near Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley when the woman driving the stolen CHP vehicle smashed into a civilian car, officials said.

As dozens of police surrounded the CHP car, the woman was taken into custody. Initial reports are that there were no injuries.
