They're back! The Galapagos Giant Tortoises were once nearly extinct, but now are thriving

Not so long ago there were only fifteen of them. Now there are more than 2,000 Giant Tortoises living and breeding in the wild in the Galapagos. By the the 1960s, giant tortoises were almost entirely wiped out. But then a long and complex effort to try and save them was launched. It worked.

Documenting more than 100 instances of harassment in 10 hours on New York streets

"Ten hours of silent walking through all areas of Manhattan, wearing jeans and a crewneck t-shirt." If that sounds like a pretty neutral low-key undertaking -- boring, even -- then you likely haven't seen the video that highlights the harassment experienced by a young woman, Shoshana Roberts, as she walks down the streets of New York. Rob Bliss directed the video for Hollaback! -- a non-profit initiative to stop street harassment. He told the story to As It Happens host Carol Off.

Thousands gathered for the funeral of Corporal Nathan Cirillo today -- and one of his senior officers shares his memories, and his grief, with us...now that lava has crept sluggishly to the outskirts of a Hawaiian village, it may be time for people to run, or walk at a reasonable pace, for their lives...and to save a 250-year-old bur oak, the University of Michigan gently, and expensively, lifts it out of the ground and moves it 150 metres.

Simeon Garratt speaks out about his parents' detention in China on accusations of spying

It has been 86 days since Canadian couple Kevin and Julia Garratt were picked up in Dandong, China, near the country's border with North Korea. Chinese authorities accused the Garratts of being spies, although they have yet to be charged. Ottawa has been quiet about the case, working through diplomatic back channels to get them released.

Thousands gathered in Hamilton today for the funeral of Cpl Nathan Cirillo. Cpl Cirillo's regiment, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, came out in force to support the family and to say farewell. Following the ceremony, As It Happens host Carol Off spoke to the corporal's friend and captain Mike Wonnacott.

Jack Bruce was half of what was maybe the most powerful rock 'n' roll rhythm section of all time. He's the guy who co-wrote White Room, Sunshine of Your Love, and Politician, when he was in Cream. The musical Jack of all trades died on Saturday. He was 71.

Prostate cancer blood test does more harm than good: Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care

It's a blood test widely used in Canada to test for prostate cancer. And now, a group of doctors is recommending it be abandoned. The prostate-specific antigen, or PSA test, screens for inflammation, which can be an indication of cancer. But according to a task force, that's just not good enough.

They're hoping to bring new life to Detroit through music. Dimitri Hegemann is a well-known club owner in Berlin, a city that was once home to run-down industrial buildings, not unlike Detroit today. The two cities have another thing in common - techno music. Now, a group known as the Detroit-Berlin Connection is hoping to revive the Motor City by turning it into a cultural hot spot.
