Amid the discussion about Tim Cook coming out, I was struck by this Fortune column suggesting that this information about the Apple CEO won’t be talked about after this news cycle. I certainly hope not. Mr. Cook has helped highlight a major workplace issue.
A May study by Human Rights Campaign found that 53% of LGBT workers hide who they are at work. And for good reason: In 29 states, workers can be fired for being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. Read More »
If Republican candidates win in North Carolina and New Hampshire, the GOP will have a good night. If Democrats win in Georgia and Iowa, the party will feel good about its chances of holding on to the Senate majority.
Those are the states that the heads of the parties’ Senate fundraising committees are looking at for early signs of momentum. Two recent surveys of Latinos and young people, both previously considered mostly Democratic supporters, prove that these groups do swing in their voting patterns, something Democrats should keep in mind for 2016.
A Pew Research Center survey–written about further here–found that most Hispanic voters still favor Democrats but that support has been shrinking the past four years.
Similarly, 18- to 30-year-olds who were so excited by Barack Obama’s 2008 candidacy have cooled on both politics and the Democrats. Read More »

The chorus of Obama administration officials pushing back against mandatory Ebola quarantines got a note louder Thursday when a top health official spoke at a policy forum in Washington.
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, said there are positive signs on Ebola in West Africa but that perhaps thousands more health workers are needed to contain it there. Read More »
Polling has consistently shown this year that the groups most enthusiastic about voting skew Republican—men over age 50, tea-party supporters and seniors among them. It’s one of the signs, commentators have often said, that Tuesday night is going to be a good one for the GOP.

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday that gross domestic product–the widest measure of U.S. economic activity–grew at an annualized rate of 3.5% in the third quarter. For the past six months GDP has been growing at a rate of 4.1%. If sustained, this would clearly constitute the recovery shifting into a higher gear.

U.S. lawmakers are voicing concern and criticism over warming ties between the Obama administration and Iran, calling it a strategic miscalculation and an affront to Washington’s decades-long alliance with Israel.
Pointing to potential consequences, members of Congress are demanding greater oversight of negotiations now nearing the final stages between Iran and global powers seeking to curtail Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for an easing of Western sanctions.
