Editorial Reviews

She is, quite simply, a global superstar.

Taylor Swift is a seven-time GRAMMY winner, and the youngest recipient in history of the music industry s highest honor, the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year. She is the best-selling digital music artist of all time, and the only female artist in music history (and just the fourth artist ever) to twice have an album hit the 1 million first-week sales figure (2010 s Speak Now and 2012 s RED). She s a household name whose insanely catchy yet deeply personal self-penned songs transcend music genres, and a savvy businesswoman who has built a childhood dream into an empire.

But the numbers don t tell Taylor's story half as well as she could. After all, it s the intangibles that elevate Swift into the stratosphere of our pop culture planet, allowing the 24-year old singer-songwriter to orbit in a more rarified air. Her large-scale charitable contributions are one thing, but it s in the small gestures the notes of compassion she posts on the Instagram photos of lovelorn fans, the genuine hugs she distributes without discretion where Swift proves time and time again that platinum-selling, record-setting success has not changed her inherent nature. She is awkwardly honest and powerfully empathetic; a brazen superfan, loyal friend, fierce protector of hearts; and one of the world s greatest ambassadors for the power of just being yourself.

Granted, for Taylor, being herself tends towards shimmering, gossamer perfection but that s an image regularly blown whenever she dons fake braces and a tri-pony to clown around on late night TV. She s the first artist since the Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at #1 with three consecutive studio albums, and while she s been named one of Time magazine s 100 Most Influential People in the World, she s probably the only person on that list who uses social media to post notes to her best friends and videos of her cats.

As Billboard s youngest-ever Woman of the Year prepares to release her fifth album, 1989, she finds herself, as always, in the glare of a blinding spotlight of expectation but if you think that scares her, you haven t been paying attention. She calls 1989 her most sonically cohesive collection, and armed with first single, Shake It Off, she s ready to blaze into the next phase of her still-young career, where she ll continue to dance like no one s watching, write like she stole our collective diary, and inevitably soar to ever-greater heights. All that s left to wonder is how many more lives she ll lift in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taylor Swift Produces The Best Pop Album Of The Year October 27, 2014
Format:Audio CD
When I reviewed Taylor’s “Red” two years ago I said, “Make no mistake about it, Taylor Swift is a rock and roll star. She's setting the bar for what pop music is.” Here we are today with the release of “1989” and Taylor has officially jumped in to the pop world 100% and has raised the bar even further for the music industry.

There are two main differences between “Red” and “1989” and the first is the use of a lot more synthesizers and a lot less guitars across the board, which makes sense considering Taylor has said her inspiration for the album was a lot of 1980’s pop music where the synth was king. The second main difference is Taylor’s songwriting has continued to evolve and while she is still telling us her stories she’s doing so more efficiently with a vast majority of the tracks coming in at under 4 minutes.

If you liked songs like “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” from “Red” and “Better Than Revenge” from “Speak Now” you are absolutely going to love pretty much everything on “1989.” The 13 songs on the album are all strong tracks that stand on their own and I can’t think of any I’d skip after repeat listens.

The overall sound of the album is a mixture of styles and sounds where the 1980’s pop meets a bit or Lorde, Lana Del Rey or even the Killers. As always it is Taylor’s lyrics and melody that shine through as she wrote or co-wrote all of the tracks on the album.

I would highly recommend getting the Deluxe version of the cd that contains 3 full bonus tracks and 3 “voice memo” tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Swiftly moving on up October 28, 2014
Format:Audio CD
1989: Pop music was inspired, emotive, meaningful, entertaining. Most of the songs written in the Eighties still sound great and many have stood the test of time. 2014: Pop music has devolved to being bland, repetitive, processed, soulless. And as about as lasting as the fizz in an open can of soda. 25 year-old pop sensation Taylor Swift is a professional who knows how to develop her craft, she is incredibly successful, a cultural phenomenon, and this is why her brand new album is deemed newsworthy. "1989", named for the year she was born, is co-written and co-produced by herself, and pop svengali Max Martin and fellow partner Shellback. Here is this young lady sheding her country-pop profile, and going full pop, making a bold transition from a teen country superstar to a young pop diva. Surprisingly (or perhaps not so much), she totally succeds. Taylor-made to the last detail, oozing confidence, maturity, and showcasing her undeniable talent, "1989" proves to be a small revelation.

Even more refreshing is the positive outlook of TS. Somewhere between the catchy hooks, and the simplicity of the lyrics, one is reminded that, some things that might seem important, really they are not in the scheme of things, and we should shake a lot of it off and move on. This most enlightning perspective is among the purposes music is supposed to serve, and one that any accomplished pop artist should be able to perpetuate. From her 2006 debut's incredible success onwards, Taylor Swift has been going from strength to strength. 8 years on, she has become a fixture in the music industry and, ultimately, a defining force. There is something to be said for a pop artist who does not trade in sleaze. I may be a GaGa devotee, a Rihanna maniac, a Lana Del Rey worshipper, a Madonna fannatic, but this young lady has talent, taste, and she is making the most of her opportunities. "1989" will most probably become another record-breaker. I say, good for her.

3.0 out of 5 stars An honest introspective from a fan October 29, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
To an extent, I disagree with there being no middle of the road on Taylor Swift's latest release. As someone who listened to her past two efforts, Speak Now and Red, extensively and religiously due to their relatable themes, catchy tunes, and smart crossing of country and pop while being relevant in both genres, I can't help but feel disappointed in this release. It isn't the new direction I have a problem with, as I am heavily fond of 80s music and actually quite like what she's doing, but I feel that there are two things that are at the forefront here that contribute to the averageness of the album as a whole.

The first thing is simply how a lot of the songs seem to blend together not only after the first listen but after ongoing listens as well. There are no standouts here in the same catchy vein as some of her best songs, such as "You Belong with Me" and "Mean." This album is more about being a cohesive whole than either of Taylor's last two albums, which were about producing material that transcended genres and said something about her and her life. The diverse offerings of Speak Now and Red were one of the things that made them appealing, as almost anyone could find a song on the album they could like. This album strives more toward a certain sound at expense of discernible, catchy synths on each song. The catchy hooks are there, like on "Shake It Off" and "Wildest Dreams" for example, but it feels like the musical hooks themselves are repetitive, with the lyrical material being different even if most of them involve her interpersonal relationships, her usual subject.

The second thing is a man by the name of Max Martin.
