Many of the paintings in The Color of Being Born depict the precarious relationship between humankind and the natural world. Growing up in Montana, artist Michael Cadieux was deeply affected by the way natural resource extraction marred the landscape. The paintings in the book reflect that trauma — the rigid, unnatural shapes and bright colors of industry and urbanization collide abruptly with sensual, more natural tones and figures. Some paintings are busy and obscure and demand — at times quite bluntly — the viewer’s undivided attention. Others hint quietly at minimalism. All the works, in a variety of media, are accompanied by brief essays from notable leaders and thinkers committed to conservation. 

A portion of the book’s proceeds will go toward the Natural Resources Defense Council.
