Robert W. Woodruff Foundation and the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership

posted on: June 12, 2014

Atlanta BeltLineThis post discusses the May 2014 Philamplify Foundation Assessment, “Robert W. Woodruff Foundation – Will Atlanta’s Quiet Changemaker Adapt to 21st Century Opportunities?

The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership is an ambitious development project that is actively changing the Georgia capital’s landscape, promoting health, sustainability and, above all, connectivity. Rather than challenging existing structures in the city, the BeltLine builds on them, using an existing 22-mile historic rail corridor surrounding the city as its foundation. By the time it’s completed (expected in 2030), this corridor will link 45 core Atlanta neighborhoods through an infrastructure of pedestrian-friendly rail transit, public parks and 33 miles of trails.

Partnerships and Relationship-Building Boost Philanthropy’s Effectiveness

posted on: May 28, 2014

Responsive-Philanthropy-Spring2014I believe that smart philanthropy draws from many voices. Our latest initiative launched earlier this month called “Philamplify” harnesses the knowledge, wisdom and power from the collective to improve the impact of philanthropy in our communities. If you haven’t had a chance yet to visit the website and check it out, I hope you’ll do so.

As NCRP and its allies continue our efforts to help solve the tough problems our society faces, it behooves us to remember that philanthropy supporting relationship-building has the opportunity to take limited dollars further. Many of the articles in this edition of Responsive Philanthropy show how strategies like this can succeed.

Strong Nonprofit-Foundation Partnerships Require More than Shared Values

posted on: September 29, 2011

“Is it possible for a foundation and a grantee to have an honest, real partnership?”

That is the question that Jan Masaoka, editor of Blue Avocado, seeks to answer in her recent article from Responsive PhilanthropyFoundation-Nonprofit Partnerships: Fact or Fiction?

Masoka explores foundation and nonprofit behavior and explains how despite having shared values, the underlying relationship is driven by institutional interests and based on money. She writes, “Both foundations and nonprofits want to use money in a way that gives them satisfaction. The institutional financial interests of foundations are to spend money in ways that give them satisfaction. The institutional financial interests of nonprofits are to get as much money, with as few strings attached as

The Importance of Union-Community-Philanthropy Partnerships

posted on: March 28, 2011

The events in Wisconsin and the attacks on unions in other states have me thinking about the importance of unions. Although I’ve never myself been a member of a union, I’m proud of my family history with the union movement.

When I was growing up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, my father taught eighth grade English and also served on the executive committee and as president of the Minnetonka Teachers Association Local 7173. The union is affiliated with both the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). I remember as a young child making picket signs in our garage when the union was getting ready to go out on strike.

Mission Investing: A Conversation with Flozell Daniels, Jr. & Foundation for Louisiana

posted on: October 14, 2014

flozelldanielsjrEarlier this year, NCRP released a special edition of our quarterly journal dedicated to mission investing, or making investments that reflect an organization’s values. As foundations are only required to pay out 5 percent of their assets annually in grants and the administrative costs of making these grants, much of the remaining 95 percent is invested to strengthen the foundation’s economic viability. As such, mission investing can be just as important to creating change as grantmaking.

Many great groups promote investments that support both the economy and the greater good, such as Mission Investors Exchange, Confluence Philanthropy, The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (US SIF) and Divest-Invest Philanthropy, just to name a few.

Foundation leaders,
