After testing a support area the prior week, cotton futures jumped last week to a six-week high in spot December before giving back nearly half the advance in some choppy daily price action.

Precipitation fell across much of the state. Areas of the Trans-Pecos and the Plains received 1 or more inches of rainfall. Portions of the Lower Valley received 2 or more inches of precipitation. The rest of the state received little to no rainfall.

Improving weather, promoting fast-paced harvesting in big areas of the Delta and Southeast, helped to keep rallies in check last week as cotton futures put in a mixed performance. Spot December dipped 52 points to close the week ended Thursday at 63.

SAN FRANCISCO — Nearly everyone agrees that texting and driving is dangerous. Many people do it anyway. In an AT&T-sponsored survey of frequent drivers who text daily — regardless of where they are — 98 percent said they were aware of the dangers of texting behind the wheel. Nonetheless, three-quarters of them admitted to texting while driving, despite broad public-service campaigns and laws against it in some states.

NEW YORK — A snaggletooth 8-year-old. A middle schooler with a punk rocker bob cut and big earrings. Tween siblings with a penchant for playing. These are among the young power brokers who will determine the toys that will be under Christmas trees this year. At a time when toy sales have stagnated for years at $22 billion, children who review toys on YouTube are wielding increasing influence. Toy makers are courting them for their ability to connect with a generation that views the online video sharing service like baby boomers do HBO.

VIENNA Saudi Arabia showed little concern for fellow OPEC members by unilaterally cutting its oil prices to the U.S. this week, a move that casts doubts on the cartel’s credibility and its ability to find a common plan to stabilize the slumping energy market. And while OPEC struggles to find consensus, oil prices risk remaining low — or falling further — to the benefit of consumers and businesses in the U.S. and worldwide.

It has been more than a month since Suddenlink customers lost a few of their favorite channels, and it doesn’t appear as if the cable provider and global mass media company have come any closer to settling their dispute. Although Suddenlink’s decision to drop Viacom channels on Oct. 1 resulted in many unhappy customers, it was far from upsetting for other cable providers.

LONDON — Oil prices slumped to multi-year lows on Tuesday after Saudi Arabia cut the price of oil sold to the U.S., a move that is shaking an already volatile market but will likely give the world economy an unexpected stimulus. The 25 percent or so slide in oil prices since the summer could boost consumer spending and business investment in many economies around the world as fuel bills fall.

WILLISTON, N.D. — Marcus Jundt moved to Williston from Minnesota almost four years ago and has opened four restaurants there since. Food isn’t propelling his business, though. It’s oil. “Everything I’ve done in Williston is a derivative of oil,” he says. That oil has averaged $96 a barrel over the past four years, fueling more drilling, more hiring, and bigger appetites in North Dakota, Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere. Now oil has hit a rough patch, plunging to $79 from $107 in June on fears of a global glut. Many expect these lower prices are to stick around for a while.
