With California facing one of the most severe droughts on record, Governor Brown declared a drought State of Emergency in January and directed state officials to take all necessary actions to prepare for water shortages. The state has continued to lead the way to make sure California is able to cope with an unprecedented drought.

Top Story: Urban Water Suppliers Show Progress In August Water Conservation Report

October 7, 2014 - Water conservation efforts in California’s urban communities continued their upward trend, climbing to 11.5 percent statewide for the month of August, according to of the latest retail water supplier report released today by the State Water Resources Control Board. The August statewide water saving rate is a significant jump from the 7.5 percent reported in July and 4 percent in June, as compared to a year ago.

Urban Water Suppliers Report Progress On Conservation Measures

September 9, 2014 - California’s urban water conservation efforts for the month of July resulted in a seven and one-half percent drop, statewide, in urban water usage from a year ago, according to results of a survey of retail water suppliers released today by the State Water Resources Control Board.

Klamath River Spit Fishery Closes

August 29, 2014 - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announces the closure of the Klamath River Spit fishery as of Sept. 1. By sundown on Sunday, Aug. 31, Klamath River anglers will have caught their sub-quota of 619 adult fall-run Chinook salmon below the Highway 101 bridge. This triggers the closure of the Spit (within 100 yards of the channel through the sand spit formed at the Klamath River mouth) to fishing as of the following morning.

State Water Board: Mandatory Water Conservation Regulation Goes Into Effect

July 29, 2014 - On July 29, 2014, an emergency regulation to increase conservation practices for all Californians went into effect. The new conservation regulation targets outdoor urban water use. In some areas of the State, 50 percent or more of daily water use is for lawns and outdoor landscaping. With this regulation, all Californians are expected to stop: washing down driveways and sidewalks; watering of outdoor landscapes that cause excess runoff; using a hose to wash a motor vehicle, unless the hose is fitted with a shut-off nozzle, and using potable water in a fountain or decorative water feature, unless the water is recirculated.

Late Storms Allow 5 Percent Allocation to State Water Project Users, Means Delta Barriers Avoided and Drought Relief Actions for Fish Fast-Tracked

April 18, 2014 - Rain and snow from February and March storms have allowed the Department of Water Resources (DWR) to increase water contract allocations for State Water Project (SWP) deliveries from zero to five percent. Precipitation from these recent storms also eliminates the current need for rock barriers to be constructed in the Delta to prevent saltwater intrusion. Additional flexibility in salinity control requirements is being sought as an alternative to the Delta rock barriers that is less harmful for fish, wildlife, and other Delta water users. The Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) announced that it will fast-track actions to manage and reduce the drought’s impact on fish.

Department of Social Services: Drought Relief Provides Food to California’s Hardest Hit Communities

April 17, 2014 – As the hot, dry months approach and extreme drought grips much of the state, the California Department of Social Services’ (CDSS) today announced that food banks in 24 drought-affected counties will be receiving shipments of food assistance. The first $5.1 million in food assistance will begin to hit food bank shelves in early May, delivered directly to drought-impacted communities.

Governor's Drought Task Force Office of Governor Office of Emergency Services California Department of Food and Agriculture State Water Board Department of Water Resources

Governor Brown has convened an interagency Drought Task Force to provide a coordinated assessment of the State’s dry conditions and provide recommendations on current and future state actions. The response to this statewide disaster requires the combined efforts of all state agencies and the state's model mutual aid system to address.

In support of this unified effort, all state agencies with a role in supporting drought mitigation and relief efforts are organized under the Incident Command System and will continue provide emergency planning, response, and mitigation support as long as needs exist. Similar task forces have been assembled in the droughts of the 2000's, 1990's,
1980's and 1970's.
