David Villa may be gone for the time being, but Melbourne City have signed another international striker: the Socceroos’ Josh Kennedy.

While Kennedy may not quite be in Villa’s class, but he has plenty of international experience, and was the top-scorer in Japan’s J-League in 2010 and 2011.

“Josh is a wonderful addition to our squad. He is the right person and the right player for Melbourne City FC and we look forward to him joining us in January,” said the Melbourne City coach, John van ‘t Schip. “Josh’s record shows that he is a proven goalscorer and with the high quality of players around him, we are confident that he can create significant problems for defences in the A-League.”

Kennedy will join City as their marquee Australian player when his contract with Nagoya Grampus ends on 31 December.

“After a very long period abroad, the timing is right to join Melbourne City and I’m very excited about this project,” said Kennedy, who has also played in Germany. “It’s a new chapter in my career, but my goal will be the same – to help my club achieve all of its aspirations. I believe Melbourne City has huge potential.”

Kennedy has scored 17 times in 33 appearances for Australia, including the goal that secured the Socceroos’ place at the 2014 World Cup. He ended up missing the tournament in Brazil through injury.
