The Croatian boxer Vido Loncar and his coaches have been barred for life by the International Boxing Association for assaulting the referee in a recent contest.

Loncar had to be dragged from the ring after he attacked the Polish referee Maciej Dziurgot following a loss to the Lithuanian Algirdas Baniulis in the light-heavyweight division on Monday at the European youth championsips in Zagreb.

Loncar punched the referee, who then fell to the floor where the boxer continued to punch him. The referee was taken to a hospital and local police arrested the Croatian boxer.

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) president, Ching-Kuo Wu, said: “AIBA and the entire boxing family have zero tolerance for this sort of behaviour.”

Loncar and his coaches are barred from participating in all AIBA competitions pending further decision by the AIBA’s disciplinary commission.
