Israel's prime minister says he has spoken to Jordan's King Abdullah II in a bid to ease mounting tensions around Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site. The two leaders spoke over the phone on Thursday, a day after Jordan recalled its ambassador to Israel to protest what it called an "unacceptable" Israeli police assault on a disputed hilltop compound in Jerusalem's Old City, revered by Jews and Muslims. Violence erupted at the site Wednesday after a group of religious Jews tried to visit. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he reiterated Israel's commitment to "preserve the status quo" at the site.
